Best iPhone cleaner apps in 2026: prices, privacy labels and what they really do

By Antosha, the developer of 1Cleaner · September 23, 2026 Competitor snapshot: US App Store prices September 25, 2026; privacy labels September 24, 2026. 1Cleaner updated for iOS 1.0.2 on October 5, 2026

Your iPhone says storage is full, you search "iPhone cleaner", and the App Store shows a dozen apps with 4.5 stars and a weekly price. This guide compares six of them on the three things that matter: what the app can actually clean inside iOS, what it really costs per year, and what its privacy label says it collects. One of the six is ours, so the facts below link to the public App Store pages they come from.

What an iPhone cleaner can and cannot do

Every app on the App Store runs in a sandbox. It sees only what you grant: your photo library, contacts, calendar, and the folders you pick in the Files app. It never sees other apps' caches, the "System Data" bar in Settings, RAM or the battery controller. That is not a limitation of one app. It is how iOS works, and it is why the best cleaner cannot free more space than there is in your own photos, videos, files and contacts.

So a real iPhone cleaner does five things: finds similar and duplicate photos, finds duplicate and huge videos, finds old screenshots and burst shots, finds big and forgotten files in your folders, and merges duplicate contacts. Anything that promises a "system scan", a "RAM boost" or a "virus check" is animating a progress bar. We wrote a separate explainer on what iPhone cleaner apps can really clean.

"Cost of a year" is the listed weekly price × 52 and assumes the subscription is kept for a year; several apps also sell a yearly plan, listed in the price column. Privacy label wording is Apple's.

The six apps, one by one

1Cleaner (ours)

1Cleaner is the app we built because we were tired of the category. Smart Clean groups similar photos with a quality-aware KEEP suggestion, and brings together burst shots, screenshots, possible duplicate videos, contacts, old calendar events and files in your chosen folders. Blurry, dark, possibly accidental and utility photos, screen recordings, 4K videos and videos longer than 3 minutes are separate review candidates with nothing selected automatically. The last result and scan date stay saved; after relaunch an unfinished scan offers Continue or Start New Scan. Large Media measures big local photos and videos and lets you select Live, HDR and RAW photos for compression. Copies list their tradeoffs before you confirm, and originals stay until you compare and choose. On iOS 26 and later, iOS may let user-started work continue after you leave, but can also stop it. Every tool has an (i) explanation; photos and videos sent to App Bin stay in Photos until you confirm deletion in 1Cleaner, then in iOS.

Swipe Clean offers Months, Largest Photos, Suggested and On This Day when available. Keep and App Bin decisions carry across collections, along with the shared 10 free swipes a day. Don't Suggest Again excludes chosen media, albums and files from Smart Clean, Swipe Clean and Files Cleanup suggestions; weekly or monthly local reminders can be turned off with Never. The app supports 45 languages.

1Cleaner base prices are in US dollars, without VAT and other local taxes.

The price is the point: free to use, $0.99 a week, $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year if you want to remove the support reminders and get unlimited swipes. Yes, there is a weekly plan: a week is the honest unit for a tool you use once in a while. It renews weekly until you cancel, so you can cancel right after one cleanup, and the period is printed on the button before you pay. There is no trial that converts, no timer, no ads and no tracking. The App Store privacy label is "Data Not Collected" because there is no analytics, advertising or attribution SDK in the app and no server that ever sees your photos. What 1Cleaner does not have: email cleanup. It is also the youngest app on this list.

Cleanup: Phone Storage Cleaner

Cleanup has the most ratings of the six, 723,000, and a polished, complete toolset: duplicate photos and videos, junk email, contact merge, video compression, a PIN-protected vault. If you ignore price and privacy, it is a well-made product, and its team has had years to refine it. On September 25, 2026 its App Store page listed five different "Pro 1 Week" prices, from $5.95 to $11.99 (which one you are offered may vary), and a yearly plan at $29.99; its description also names a Lifetime Subscription, with no lifetime price among the listed purchases. Kept for a year at the weekly price, that is $309 to $623 for a photo cleaner. The privacy label declares tracking (purchases, identifiers, usage data) and advertising data linked to you. See the full side-by-side in 1Cleaner vs Cleanup.

Cleaner Kit

Cleaner Kit claims 70 million users and offers a wide set of tools: photos, videos, emails, contacts and more. It has the broadest tracking declaration of the six, including location and "other data", with third-party advertising linked to you. The App Store page lists premium tiers between $4.99 and $6.99 without saying which billing period each price is for (the description says weekly or annual), so check the paywall carefully before you tap. Its reviews are worth reading for the duplicate-contact merge feature specifically.

CleanMy®Phone by MacPaw

MacPaw makes CleanMyMac, and CleanMy®Phone is the most reasonably priced of the paid cleaners here: $36.99 a year, $7.99 a month, or a $34.99 "Unlimited access" option, with separate Gemini Photos plans from $2.99 a month on the same listing. It uses on-device analysis to pick the best shot in a group and has a calm, well-designed interface. Its privacy label still declares tracking by identifiers and usage data and lists third-party advertising, but not linked to you. If you want a mature app from a known developer and can live with $37 a year, it is the honest choice among the incumbents. Details in 1Cleaner vs CleanMy®Phone.

Swipewipe: Photo Cleaner

Swipewipe made swiping through your camera roll month by month genuinely fun: swipe right to keep, left to delete, with an "On This Day" feed, bookmarks, a widget and streaks. It is a photo app, not a full cleaner: its listing mentions no files, contacts or compression. Weekly prices on the page run from $3.99 to $9.99 (a year at the weekly price is $207 to $519), with a yearly plan at $29.99. The label declares tracking and third-party advertising linked to you. Swipe Clean in 1Cleaner now offers month review, Largest Photos, Suggested and On This Day when available, with 10 free swipes a day shared across collections and unlimited swipes at $0.99 a week; the comparison is in 1Cleaner vs Swipewipe.

Boost Cleaner: Clean Up Smart

Boost Cleaner is typical of the long tail: weekly plans at $5.99 and $6.99, monthly at $9.99 to $12.99 and yearly at $34.99 to $49.99, with a "Quick Scan" of your "storage health". The label declares tracking including location. The tools on the listing are the usual photo, contact and large-file cleanup. Nothing here is unique, and the paywall is the product.

How to choose an iPhone cleaner in 60 seconds

  1. Find the billing period on the paywall and multiply a weekly price by 52. If the number is above what you would pay for a year of Apple Music, close the app.
  2. Scroll to App Privacy on the App Store page. "Data Not Collected" or a short "Data Not Linked to You" list is fine. "Data Used to Track You" plus "Third-Party Advertising" means your usage is part of the business model.
  3. Look for an explanation of what the tool does. Real cleaners tell you what "similar" means and where deleted items go. A "system scan" animation is a sign to leave.
  4. Check that deletion is reversible. Photos should go to Recently Deleted, files to Recently Deleted in Files, and the app should say so.
  5. Prefer no account. A cleaner needs nothing from you but permission to your photos. An email wall means marketing.

What iOS already does for free

Before installing anything, try the built-in tools. Photos can find and merge duplicate photos and videos (Duplicates album, iOS 16 and later). Contacts lets you review duplicate cards and merge them individually or all at once. Settings › General › iPhone Storage lists your biggest apps and offers to offload the ones you do not use. Deleted photos and videos stay in Photos › Recently Deleted for 30 days; files moved to Recently Deleted in Files remain there until permanently removed or their retention period expires. Permanently deleting these items releases the storage they still occupy, but the free-space figure may take time to update. With Optimize iPhone Storage, some originals are in iCloud, so the space freed on the device may be smaller than their original file sizes. 1Cleaner brings similar-photo review, screenshot cleanup, large-media review, files cleanup and contact tools into one workflow.

1Cleaner does all of the above on your device. Free to use, $0.99 a week, $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year. No ads, no tracking, no account.

FAQ

Do I need a cleaner app for my iPhone at all?

Not always. Photos can find and merge duplicate photos and videos. Contacts lets you review duplicate cards and merge them individually or all at once. You can also offload unused apps in Settings › General › iPhone Storage. 1Cleaner brings similar-photo review, screenshot cleanup, large-media review, files cleanup and contact tools into one workflow.

What is the best free iPhone cleaner app?

1Cleaner (ours, on the App Store) works fully for free: every tool runs without a subscription and dismissible support prompts appear before scans, cleanups, compressions and Private Vault imports, with a limit of 10 free Swipe Clean swipes a day shared across collections. Most other cleaners let you scan for free but put deletion or the useful tools behind a weekly plan.

Are iPhone cleaner apps safe?

The app itself cannot damage iOS: every photo and video deletion goes through an Apple confirmation dialog and deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days. The real risks are elsewhere: weekly plans that cost hundreds of dollars a year, and privacy labels that declare tracking and advertising data. Read the price period on the paywall and the App Privacy section before you install.

Can a cleaner app clear System Data or other apps' cache on iPhone?

No. iOS keeps every app in its own sandbox. No App Store app can read or delete another app's cache, RAM or the System Data category. Apps that show a system scan or a RAM boost are animating, not cleaning. A cleaner can only work with what you grant it: photos, videos, contacts, calendar and files in folders you pick.

How much does a $7.99 a week cleaner app cost per year?

$7.99 multiplied by 52 weeks is $415.48 if you keep the subscription for a year. Cleanup, Swipewipe and Boost Cleaner also list yearly plans, from $29.99 to $49.99, so check which plan the paywall has selected before you pay.
